This holiday season imported gifts can be purchased locally that will help people globally, through the Fair Trade Holiday Market in downtown Great Bend.
The first look at what is available will be at the All Church Bazaar on Saturday, November 7, at St. Rose Auditorium from 8 am to 1 pm.
The market will open at the Outlet Store from November 11 through November 14 from 10 am to 6 pm and again November 27 and 28.
The Outlet Store is located at 1210 Main Street in Great Bend.
The goal of selling Fair Trade is to help people out of extreme poverty by purchasing merchandise directly from the artist or grower.
This empowers the artisans and farmers to live a better life because
Fair Trade organizations support equal rights for women, safe working
environments, age appropriate employees and fair wages.
This year's Fair Trade Holiday Market is being sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church and First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend in partnership with SERRV International www.serrv.org.
Fair Trade coffee, tea, and chocolate will be available along with a wide variety of beautiful handcrafted items.
Unique handmade basketry is only one of the many types of items created by artisans from around the world which will be available at this years' Fair Trade Holiday Market
sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church and the Congregational UCC in Great Bend.
Please Note that several items are available in the church’s Medical Mission Closet. If you have need for a wheel chair, a walker, a four-footed cane, a raised toilet seat, a shower seat, or a breathing machine you can call the church office or Bill King and arrange to borrow what you need.
A memorial to Dale Kline has been given for the purpose of adding to the items available. If you have suggestions of items that would be useful, please notify Bill King or any member of the Mission Ministry of the Session.
Our church gives yearly $2,000 to the Barton County Emergency Aid Council. Besides emergency aid needs, the Council coordinates Christmas food boxes for churches and organizations, distributes fans during the summer, distributes blankets on behalf of the Farmer's Bank, coordinates applications for the Farmer's Bank Angel Tree, and distributes stuffed animals for the Eagle Lodge.
1) For 2009 the PC(USA) Mission Initiative was able to deploy 25 new mission personnel.
2) The Presbytery of Southern Kansas has begun a fund-raising campaign to build a new chapel at Westminster Woods Camp. See information on the bulletin board in the Narthex.
3) This year's General Assembly established a 2-year initiative called "Grow Christ's Church Deep and Wide" which is designed to help reverse the decades-long decline in our denomination's membership. We'll be asked to look at and participate in these FOUR WAYS TO GROW over the next two years.
